Classic French Onion Soup
Ingredients
- 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 6 cup s beef broth
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 6 slices French bread, toasted
- 2 cup s shredded Gruyère cheese

Melt butter with olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt.

Cook onions, stirring occasionally, for 40-50 minutes until deeply caramelized and golden brown. Reduce heat if they start to burn.

Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Pour in white wine and scrape up any browned bits.

Add beef broth, thyme, bay leaves, and Worcestershire. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

Remove bay leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Preheat broiler. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each with a slice of toasted bread and a generous mound of Gruyère.

Broil for 2-3 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
